The Pokrov - Lot 16
The Pokrov Icon of Russian origin, Pskov region, from the 17th century. The icon is composed of a tempered insert on levkas and canvas, placed and mounted on a wooden panel probably at the beginning of the 20th century. The Pokrov, veil in Russian, originates from the cult of the maphorion of the Virgin. The Virgin is represented in the centre holding the maphorion deployed as a sign of protection. The architectural background consists of a church with five domes, and refers to the hagiography of St. Andrew the Yurodive, illustrating his vision of the Virgin accompanied by St. John the Precursor and St. John the Theologian, in the Church of the Blachernes in Constantinople, where she unfurls her veil as a sign of protection over the believers and recalls her role as a mediator between God and humanity. The lower part of the icon illustrates another miracle, that of her apparition to St. Roman the Melodious, represented in the centre, on the ambo, dressed in the deacon's dalmatic. These two miracles are depicted together, linked by the place and the gesture, the protection and perpetual help of the Virgin. The feast of Pokrov is peculiar to the Slavic Orthodox Churches and has never been recognized by other Orthodox Churches. Good general condition. The original painting has been worn and a gap in the Virgin's clothing has been filled in. 27x36cm
