English school of the XIXth century, entourage of Thomas Sho - Lot 68
English school of the XIXth century, entourage of Thomas Shotter BOYS. Calais, view of the rue de la Paix with Watchtower and English Belfry. Watercolor and gouache highlights on paper 73,5 x 52 cm (at sight). Small tears on 5.5 cm on the bottom left and on 1.5 cm on the top left, stains. This watercolor shows the rue de la Paix, formerly rue des Boucheries, as it was in the middle of the 19th century. Coming from the rue Notre-Dame, we see the watchtower that was converted into a lighthouse with a rotating light from 1818 to 1848. The white disk on the left side is the relay of the optical telegraph of Abraham Chappe installed in 1816. Just before the tower, you can see on the right the place du marché aux herbes. Finally, in the background, the English belfry dating from the 16th century and disappeared in the fifties after having been ravaged, like all this district of Calais, during the Second World War. The only surviving monument is the watchtower.
