CHINA (India Company) - Lot 53
CHINA (India Company) Pair of important porcelain Palace vases with polychrome and gold decoration in Famille Rose enamels of a pair of phoenixes in a park with a flowered fence and pierced rocks. The neck is decorated with stylized reserves and a frieze of lewen on a coral background. Qianlong period (1735-1796). Carved and gilded wood Fö dog lids. (Cracks on the vases, enamel chips, restorations on the lids). H. 141 cm. Carved and gilded wood bases. H. : 28 cm. Diameter : 63 cm. These monumental vases were so complex to make that Father François-Xavier d'Entrecolles (1664-1741), a missionary priest of the Society of Jesus in China, reported in his writings revealing the techniques of porcelain making: "out of twenty-four, only eight succeeded...". Among the few known examples is a pair of identical vases in the great gallery of Osterley Park in London, probably the one described by Sophie de la Roche in her diary in 1786 about a visit to Osterley: "There are huge Japanese vases in there, too, big enough to hide Carl (her younger brother). Also of note is a second pair of identical vases in the Tibor Collection (Part. II), which was auctioned in New York (Christie's, January 23, 2020, lot 95). Finally, a pair of identical vases is now in the collection of H.M. Queen Elizabeth II at Windsor Castle (WC/346). (Four wooden cases)
