Pair of spindle-shaped vases in brown patina bronze and gild - Lot 90
Pair of spindle-shaped vases in brown patina bronze and gilded bronze, decorated on the body of the vase with a Renommée and entwined snakes. Handles with a Satyr and foliage base, finished in Greek. The shoulder and the base of the vases are underlined by palmettes. Bases in cherry red marble. Empire period. (One handle detached, small chips and re-corking of the marble, one pedestal shortened, some screws changed). H. 55,5 cm and 56 cm. These vases are to be compared : - a pair preserved in the National Museum of Stockholm (NM 26fi1907) collection of King Karl XIV, Bernadotte. - a pair reproduced in Vergoldete Bronzen, H. Ottomeyer and P. Pröschel, Munich, 1986, vol I p.365, fig.5.12.8. - of another pair, supporting a bouquet of lights, adorning around 1802 one of the salons of the small apartments of Madame Bonaparte in the Palais de Saint-Cloud. Long attributed to Claude Galle, this model would seem to be initiated by Thomire: a pair of vases signed Thomire, having appeared in the Sotheby's sale in Paris, December 2, 2003, under the n° 72
