VIENNA (manufacture of the Augarten palace in Leopoldstadt) - Lot 103
VIENNA (manufacture of the Augarten palace in Leopoldstadt) Pair of porcelain covered vases of baluster form, with polychrome and gold decoration of ancient scenes illustrating The dismissal of the lictors and Decius Mus telling his dream, signed Leopold Lieb and dated 1817. The fields with gold background decorated with trophies of arms and friezes of palmettes, fleurons and rosettes in matte and glossy. The holds of the lids in the shape of seed and the square bases. Handles in chased and gilded bronze in the shape of snakes. Period 1784-1864, early 19th century. (Small chips, gold wear, some restorations, one vase restored). H. 82 cm. L. : 44 cm. P. : 35 cm. The painted representations are based on the famous paintings by Peter Paul Rubens, now in the collections of the Prince of Lichtenstein in Vienna (Lichtenstein Museum, Inv. GE 47 and GE 50). These two painted scenes come from a set of paintings on the history of Decius Mus, executed by Rubens from 1616 to 1618. In 1693, John Adam I of Lichtenstein acquired Rubens' original series of eight works, six of which depict scenes from the story of Decius Mus, and two of which are entre-fenêtres depicting female personifications or trophies. The beginning of the 19th century marked the golden age of the manufactory with the peak of neo-classicism under the direction of Konrad de Sorgenthal. Leopold LIEB (born September 1, 1771 in Vienna - died December 6, 1836), was a painter on porcelain. After attending the Academy of Fine Arts, he joined the porcelain factory in 1800 as an enamel painter, where he worked mainly as a history painter until 1834. A plate painted by Leopold Lieb is now in the collection of H.S.H. Prince of Liechtenstein in Vienna (Inv. No. 2691). We thank Mr. Laurent Calès, expert in old paintings, for the identification of the painted scenes. (Two wooden cases)
