Crouching Aphrodite or Aphrodite in the Bath - Lot 134
Crouching Aphrodite or Aphrodite in the Bath Reproduction in resin by the Réunion des Musées Nationaux, after the original in marble kept in the Louvre (Inv. 2240). Signed. H. 32 cm. L. : 23 cm. P. : 11, 5 cm. The theme of Aphrodite in the bath, inherited from the 4th century B.C., met with great success among Hellenistic artists who liked to depict female nudity. The motif was often taken up by Roman copyists to decorate gardens and baths. The goddess is sometimes associated with Love. The Venus of Sainte-Colombe is one of the many antique replicas of a squatting Aphrodite, perhaps executed by Doidalses of Bithynia in the 3rd century BC.
