Rectangular chest of drawers opening with a large drawer in - Lot 81
Rectangular chest of drawers opening with a large drawer in the waist simulating two drawers and two large drawers on two rows without rail. It presents a marquetry with scrolls in stained wood and shaded, in medallions and reserves highlighted with wolves teeth. The fields plated with rosewood and rosewood. Feet in sheath. In the manner of Giuseppe Maggiolini. Italy, Lombardy, late 18th century-early 19th century. (Restorations). H. 91 cm. L. : 123 cm. P. : 58 cm. This chest of drawers, with its marquetry with grotesque decoration of Raphaelesque inspiration, follows the influence of Giuseppe Maggiolini (1738-1814), the most famous cabinetmaker of the neoclassical period in Italy. He became "intarsiatore ufficiale" of the archduke's highnesses of Lombardy under Habsburg rule, and his fame spread throughout Europe. The King of Poland Stanislas-August Poniatowski, Maria Carolina of Naples as well as the courts of Vienna, Modena and Parma called upon him. If his early works are influenced by the German rocaille style, his full artistic affirmation will coincide with the development of the new neoclassical fashion. Neoclassical commodes signed by Maggiolini are very rare. Many were inspired by him and his style was widely adopted in northern and central Italy in the last third of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century.
