Daniel II MIJTENS (1644-1688) - Lot 12
Daniel II MIJTENS (1644-1688) Eurydice. Oil on canvas (framed). 95,5 x 122,5 cm. (Restorations). (A wooden case). A pupil of his father, Jan (1614-1670), Daniel Mijtens traveled to Italy in the mid-1660s, attending the studio of Carlo Maratta in Rome and returning to The Hague at the end of the decade where he pursued a career as a portraitist and history painter, interrupted by an untimely death. Other paintings by Mijtens show similarities to ours. The attitude of Eurydice is close to that of the Callisto in "Jupiter and Callisto" in the Dessau-Worlitz Cultural Center, Mosigkau Castle, Germany (Inv. Mos-73), and the setting is similar to that of "Mercury and Hersé", a painting signed and dated 1682 (Anonymous sale, Amsterdam, Sotheby's, May 8, 2001, lot 10). Influences of Gerard de Lairesse and Gerard Hoet can also be seen in our painting. The attribution to Daniel Mijtens was confirmed at the Aaron Gallery in June 2006 by Jan Kosten, curator at the RKD. Provenance : Didier Aaron Gallery, 2006
