Provenance: - Christie's New York, October 23, 2003, lot 754 (with antique green marbles). - Galerie Didier Aaron, Paris. The inlaid decoration on this console is inspired by that on the flap desk and console delivered by Jean-Henri Riesener to Marie-Antoinette, probably for the Château de Saint-Cloud (Inv. 1915.5.75 and 1915.5.76). Other pieces of furniture have an identical latticework, among which is a commode preserved at Versailles and delivered on March 28, 1782 by Riesener for the Queen's bedroom (Meyer, Le mobilier de Versailles, 2002, vol.I, p. 79, reprod.), as well as a table preserved in the Gulbenkian Museum in Lisbon, delivered for the Queen's private apartments on April 30, 1781 (Verlet, Le Mobilier royal français, 1990, n° 20, reprod.)
