Rare blue enamelled porcelain and chased and gilded bronze s - Lot 68
Rare blue enamelled porcelain and chased and gilded bronze set, composed of a pair of baluster vases with elephants and a baluster vase with a rhinoceros. Each vase with cut sides has a chased and gilded bronze frame decorated with the remains of a rhinoceros and an elephant. Handles in the form of archaic chilong. China, 18th c. for the porcelains. (Restorations). Later period gilt bronze mounts. Inscribed in ink under the vases "Narychkin" and numbered 5606/5 and 5696. Height of each vase : 42,5 cm / 44,5 cm / 45 cm. Provenance: Parke Bernet New York, December 9, 1955, lot 328 (probably acquired by Percival Farquhar). Christie's Paris, June 22, 2005, lot 158. Galerie Jean Lupu, Paris. The elephant and rhinoceros head mounts were inspired by the famous Sèvres porcelain vases designed by Jean-Claude Duplessis, created in 1757 for the Manufacture of which he was then the artistic director. The set we are presenting is to be compared with a pair of blue Chinese porcelain vases also decorated with an ormolu mount with elephant heads (Christie's London, December 12, 2002, lot 49) and which probably derives from the same Sèvres model. This pair, with its neo-classical motifs, is probably more representative of the work of Jean-Claude Thomas Chambellan Duplessis "fils" (ca. 1730-1783). He was awarded the title of master foundryman and chiseller in 1765 and began working with his father in 1752. The Narychkin family was an illustrious Russian family, one of whose members, Nathalie Narychkin, married Tsar Alexis I in 1671 and became Tsarina of Russia until 1676. Since the 18th century, members of this great family have held the highest positions in the imperial administration. Among them we can mention : Semion (Simon) Kirillovitch (1710-1775), ambassador to London and grand veneur of the court Petr Kirillovich (1713-1770), aide-de-camp to the empress, chamberlain Alexei Vassilievitch (1742-1800), chamberlain and later diplomat and man of letters, friend of Denis Diderot. Kirill Alexandrovitch (1786-1838), member of the State Council. Alexander Alexeyevich (1839-1916), private adviser to the emperor, senator, deputy minister of agriculture and then of estates. Kirill Mikhailovich (1855-1922), state councilor, minister in Stuttgart and then in Stockholm
